{To The chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. read more Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. She crieth in The chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all The chief spices:
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all The chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from The chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.
For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among The chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, The chief of their might.
And the captain of the guard took Seraiah The chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:
Her adversaries are The chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, The chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

And when he had gathered all The chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto The chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
And when The chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,
And when he was come into the temple, The chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
And when The chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
Then assembled together The chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from The chief priests and elders of the people.
Now The chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
When the morning was come, all The chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to The chief priests and elders,
And The chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
But The chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, The chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto The chief priests all the things that were done.
And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of The chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. read more For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. show less
Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto The chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:
And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him The chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto The chief priests, to betray him unto them.
And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from The chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all The chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
And The chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
And straightway in the morning The chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
But The chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
Likewise also The chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of The chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out The chief rooms; saying unto them,
And he taught daily in the temple. But The chief priests and the scribes and The chief of the people sought to destroy him,
And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, The chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
And The chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and The chief rooms at feasts;
And The chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
And he went his way, and communed with The chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
Then Jesus said unto The chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and The chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of The chief priests prevailed.
And how The chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and The chief priests sent officers to take him.
Then came the officers to The chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
Then gathered The chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
Now both The chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
Nevertheless among The chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from The chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and The chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
When The chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Then said The chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that The chief priests and elders had said unto them.
But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto The chief priests?
But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and The chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was The chief speaker.
And from thence to Philippi, which is The chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, The chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.
And certain of The chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto The chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw The chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul.
Then The chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done.
And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto The chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?
The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
When the centurion heard that, he went and told The chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
And The chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and The chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded The chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
And when there arose a great dissension, The chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
And they came to The chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul. Now therefore ye with the council signify to The chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would inquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

Then The chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?
So The chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
But The chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias The chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.
Then the high priest and The chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, The chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.
And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with The chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.
Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from The chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from The chief priests, At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. read more But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. show less
