Ecclesiastes 1:14
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. |

Isaiah 47:9-15
But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments. For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me. Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. read more Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee. show less |
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the Vanity of their mind,
O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love Vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and Vanity.
Surely men of low degree are Vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than Vanity.
Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh Vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a Vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is Vanity and vexation of spirit.
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was Vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is Vanity and vexation of spirit.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is Vanity and vexation of spirit.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is Vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also Vanity and vexation of spirit.
There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also Vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is Vanity and vexation of spirit.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is Vanity, and it is an evil disease.
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also Vanity and vexation of spirit.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is Vanity.
All things have I seen in the days of my Vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also Vanity.
There is a Vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is Vanity.
Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy Vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy Vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is Vanity.
Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of Vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:
And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of Vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.
They that make a graven image are all of them Vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing? Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together. The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint. read more The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house. He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it. Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto. He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire: And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god. They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand? show less
Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking Vanity;
They are Vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, Vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
They are Vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see Vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
Therefore ye shall see no more Vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Whiles they see Vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.
Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are Vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very Vanity?
For the creature was made subject to Vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the Vanity of their mind,
For when they speak great swelling words of Vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
