Context Summary

1 Corinthians 12:12-19 - Many Members In One Body
The use of gifts must never be dictated by personal ambition or the desire for selfish gain. As every member of the physical body is united to the head by two sets of nerves, the afferent, which bring to the brain the slightest sense impressions, and the efferent, which bear to the extremities the commands of the mind, so is every member of the Church, even the feeblest and most distant, bound to his glorious Lord. The head of the swimmer is in one element-the air-and the members may be in another-the water-yet the head is able to control and co-ordinate them; so with the unseen Christ and His visible Church on earth. He must direct and use us. We have nothing to do with the work He confides to others, and must concentrate on that which He wants to achieve through us. If this means co-operation with other members or service to them; if it means hidden obscurity or temporary disuse, we must be equally content. It is for Him to do as He will. There is no room for envy or jealousy; they must give place to loving fellowship and mutual help, and the quiet peace and rest which come from recognizing the good pleasure of the Creator. [source]

Chapter Summary: 1 Corinthians 12

1  Spiritual gifts,
4  are diverse,
7  yet to profit all
8  And to that end are diversely bestowed;
12  as the members of a natural body tend all to the mutual decency,
22  service,
26  and helpfulness of the same body;
27  so we should do for one another, to make up the body of Christ

Greek Commentary for 1 Corinthians 12:15

If the foot shall say [εαν ειπηι ο πους]
Condition of third class In case the foot say. [source]
I am not of the body [ουκ ειμι εκ του σωματος]
I am independent of the body, not dependent on the body. It is not therefore not of the body (ου παρα τουτο ουκ εστιν εκ του σωματος — ou para touto ouk estin ek tou sōmatos). Thinking or saying so does not change the fact. Παρα τουτο — Para touto here means “alongside of this” (cf. 4 Maccabees 10:19) and so “because of,” a rare use (Robertson, Grammar, p. 616). The two negatives (ουουκ — ou̇̇ouk) do not here destroy one another. Each retains its full force. [source]

Galatians 4:6 Because ye are sons [ὅτι]
For ὅτι in this sense at the beginning of a clause see Romans 9:7; 1 Corinthians 12:15; John 15:19; John 20:29. The emphasis is on sons. The spirit would not be given is ye were not sons. Others take ὅτι as demonstrative, as a proof that ye are sons; but examples of such usage are wanting. It is not a proof of the fact of sonship that the apostle is giving, but a consequence of it. Comp. Romans 8:16, where the witness of the Spirit attests the sonship. [source]
Galatians 4:6 Because ye are sons [οτι εστε υιοι]
This is the reason for sending forth the Son (Galatians 4:4 and here). We were “sons” in God‘s elective purpose and love. οτι — Hoti is causal (1 Corinthians 12:15; Romans 9:7). [source]
