[8] If thou seest  the oppression  of the poor,  and violent  perverting of judgment  and justice  in a province,  marvel  not at the matter:  for he that is higher  regardeth;  and there be higher  than they.  [9] Moreover the profit  of the earth  is for all: the king  himself is served  by the field. 

What does Ecclesiastes 5:8-9 Mean?

Contextual Meaning

The point of these verses seems to be that the fruits of one"s work can also disappear as a result of taxes and unfair oppression by political rulers. A hierarchy of officials is in view. By legal and illegal means, rulers squeeze money out of the populace. Even Song of Solomon , it is better to have government than not have it (cf. Romans 13:1-7). One translation of Ecclesiastes 5:9 Isaiah , "But an advantage to a land for everyone is: a king over cultivated land." [1]
