[31] Then  saith  Jesus  unto them,  All  shall be offended  because  night:  for  it is written,  I will smite  the shepherd,  and  the sheep  of the flock  shall be scattered abroad.  [32] But  after  am risen again,  I will go before  into  Galilee.  [33] Peter  answered  and  said  unto him,  all  men shall be offended  because  yet will I  never  be offended.  [34] Jesus  said  unto him,  Verily  I say  That  this  night,  before  the cock  crow,  thou shalt deny  thrice.  [35] Peter  said  unto him,  Though  should  die  with  deny  Likewise  also  said  all  the disciples.

What does Matthew 26:31-35 Mean?

Contextual Meaning

Jesus evidently gave this prediction before He and His disciples left the upper room (cf. Luke 21:31-38; John 13:36-38). Matthew and Mark probably placed it where they did in their Gospels to stress the gravity of the disciples" defection and Peter"s denial. [1] Matthew presented Jesus as knowing exactly what lay ahead of Him. He was not a victim of fate, but He deliberately approached His death as a willing sacrifice and prepared His disciples carefully for the trauma of that event.
