Luke 23:26-49

Luke 23:26-49

[26] And  as  him  away,  they laid hold upon  one  Simon,  a Cyrenian,  coming  out of  the country,  him  they laid  the cross,  that he might bear  it after  Jesus.  [27] And  there followed  him  a great  company  of people,  and  of women,  which  also  bewailed  and  lamented  him.  [28] But  Jesus  turning  unto  them  said,  Daughters  of Jerusalem,  weep  not  for  but  weep  for  yourselves,  and  for  children.  [29] For,  behold,  the days  are coming,  in  the which  they shall say,  Blessed  are the barren,  and  the wombs  that  never  bare,  and  the paps  which  never  [30] Then  shall they begin  to say  to the mountains,  Fall  on  and  to the hills,  Cover  [31] For  if  they do  in  a green  tree,  what  shall be done  in  the dry?  [32] And  there were also  two  other,  malefactors,  led  with  him  to be put to death.  [33] And  when  to  the place,  which  is called  Calvary,  there  they crucified  him,  and  the malefactors,  one  on  the right hand,  and  the other  on  the left.  [34] Then  Jesus,  Father,  forgive  them;  for  they know  not  what  they do.  And  they parted  his  raiment,  and cast  lots.  [35] And  the people  stood  beholding.  And  the rulers  also  derided  him, saying,  He saved  others;  let him save  himself,  if  he  Christ,  the chosen  of God.  [36] And  the soldiers  also  mocked  him,  coming  to him, and  offering  him  vinegar,  [37] And  saying,  If  thou  the king  of the Jews,  save  thyself.  [38] And  a superscription  also  over  him  in letters  of Greek,  and  Latin,  and  Hebrew,  THIS  THE KING  OF THE JEWS.  [39] And  one  of the malefactors  which were hanged  railed  on him,  saying,  thou  Christ,  save  thyself  and  [40] But  the other  answering  rebuked  him,  not  thou  fear  God,  seeing  in  the same  condemnation?  [41] And  indeed  justly;  for  we receive  the due reward  of our  deeds:  but  this man  hath done  nothing  amiss.  [42] And  unto Jesus,  when  thou comest  kingdom.  [43] And  said  unto him,  Verily  I say  To day  with  in  paradise.  [44] about  the sixth  hour,  and  there was  a darkness  over  all  the earth  until  the ninth  hour.  [45] the sun  the veil  of the temple  was rent  in the midst.  [46] And  when Jesus  had cried  with a loud  voice,  he said,  Father,  into  hands  I commend  spirit:  and  having said  he gave up the ghost.  [47] Now  when the centurion  what was done,  he glorified  God,  saying,  Certainly  this  a righteous  man.  [48] And  all  the people  that came together  to  sight,  beholding  the things which were done,  smote  breasts,  and returned.  [49] And  all  his  acquaintance,  and  the women  that followed  him  from  Galilee,  stood  afar off,  beholding

What does Luke 23:26-49 Mean?

Contextual Meaning

Luke"s account of the crucifixion includes a prophecy of the fate of Jerusalem ( Luke 23:29-31), more emphasis on the men who experienced crucifixion with Jesus ( Luke 23:39-43), and less stress on the crowd that mocked Jesus. It climaxes with Jesus" final prayer of trust in His Father ( Luke 23:46) and the reactions of various people to His death ( Luke 23:47-49).
"In this version of the story we may see an accent on the way in which Jesus died as a martyr, innocent of the charges against him, trusting to the end in God, and assured of his own place in paradise. The whole scene vindicates the claim that he is the Messiah of God." [1]
