John 12:44-50

John 12:44-50

[44] Jesus  cried  and  said,  He that believeth  on  believeth  not  on  but  on  him that sent  [45] And  he that seeth  him that sent  [46] am come  a light  into  the world,  whosoever  believeth  on  abide  in  darkness.  [47] And  any man  hear  words,  and  judge  him  not:  for  I came  not  to  judge  the world,  but  to  save  the world.  [48] He that rejecteth  and  receiveth  not  words,  hath  one that judgeth  him:  the word  that  I have spoken,  the same  shall judge  him  in  the last  day.  [49] For  not  spoken  of  myself;  but  the Father  which sent  he  gave  a commandment,  what  I should say,  and  what  I should speak.  [50] And  I know  that  his  commandment  life  everlasting:  whatsoever  speak  therefore,  even as  the Father  said  so  I speak.

Contextual Meaning

John added Jesus" words that follow as a climactic appeal to his readers to believe on Jesus. This exhortation summarizes and restates some of the major points that John recorded Jesus teaching earlier. These themes include faith, Jesus as the One sent by the Father, light and darkness, judgment now and later, and eternal life. Jesus evidently gave it to the crowd as a final challenge. He probably delivered it during His week of teaching in the temple during the Passover season.
