Exodus 20:8-11

Exodus 20:8-11

[8] Remember  the sabbath  day,  to keep it holy.  [9] Six  days  shalt thou labour,  and do  all thy work:  [10] But the seventh  day  is the sabbath  of the LORD  thy God:  in it thou shalt not do  any work,  thou, nor thy son,  nor thy daughter,  thy manservant,  nor thy maidservant,  nor thy cattle,  nor thy stranger  that is within thy gates:  [11] For in six  days  the LORD  made  heaven  and earth,  the sea,  and all that in them is, and rested  the seventh  day:  wherefore the LORD  blessed  the sabbath  day,  and hallowed  it.

What does Exodus 20:8-11 Mean?

Contextual Meaning

The Sabbath was the seventh day of the week, Saturday. This day was to be a day of rest for Israel because God ceased from His creation activity on the seventh day ( Genesis 2:3). God blessed it and made it holy ( Exodus 20:11) in that He made it different from the other days of the week for Israel.
This is the only one of the Ten Commandments not reiterated for the church in the New Testament. Traditionally the church has celebrated the first day of the week as a memorial to Jesus Christ"s resurrection, which event is the ground of our rest ( Romans 4:25). [1]
