Two "ends" are in view here:
(1) historically, the end of the third, or Grecian empire of Alexander out of one of the divisions of which the little horn of Daniel 8:9 (Antiochus) arose;
(2) prophetically, the end of the times of the Gentiles Luke 21:24 ; Revelation 16:14 when the "little horn" of Daniel 7:8 ; Daniel 7:24-26 the Beast, will arise--Daniel's final time of the end.
The "time of the end" in Daniel. The expression, or its equivalent, "in the end," occurs, Daniel 8:17-19 ; Daniel 9:26 ; Daniel 11:35 ; Daniel 11:40 ; Daniel 11:45 ; Daniel 12:4 ; Daniel 12:6 ; Daniel 12:9 .
Summary:

(2) The duration of the "time of the end" is three and one half years, coinciding with the last half of the seventieth week of Daniel. Daniel 7:25 ; Daniel 12:7 ; Revelation 13:5 .
(3) This "time of the end" is the "time of Jacob's trouble." Jeremiah 30:7 "a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation" Daniel 12:1 "great tribulation such as was not from the beginning of the world.. . nor ever shall be" Matthew 24:21 . The N.T., especially the Book of the Revelation, adds many details.

Verse Meaning

Gabriel clarified that what he was going to explain dealt with "the final period of the indignation" and "the appointed time of the end." Clearly this was future from Daniel"s point in history. Yet does it refer to the time of Antiochus Epiphanes exclusively, [1] or does it refer to the end times before Jesus Christ returns, [2] or both? Most premillennial interpreters believe that it refers to both in some sense, either as a double fulfillment [2] or as a type and antitype. [4] To me the difference between the double fulfillment view and the type and antitype view is semantic. Both of these views see some fulfillment in Antiochus and some in the Antichrist. The conclusion that the prophecy relates to both times rests on what follows in Daniel 8:23-25 and on other uses of the phrase "the end" in Daniel ( Daniel 9:26; Daniel 11:6; Daniel 11:27; Daniel 11:35; Daniel 11:40; Daniel 11:45; Daniel 12:4; Daniel 12:6; Daniel 12:9; Daniel 12:13). Other examples of this double, or typological fulfillment, are Jesus fulfilling what was prophesied of Him-fulfilled to some degree earlier by Moses, the Israelites, and David.

It does not fall within our province to go into the various fulfillments which have been assigned to the predictions of this chapter-one to the time of the Maccabees, one to our own days, and one to that malign Satanic power which stands up perpetually against the Prince of princes. Let us dwell, rather, on the assertion that whatever sets itself against the kingship of Jesus Christ shall inevitably be broken. The Church of God is menaced today, as never before, by a vast multiplication of malign influences; but the Master's promise holds good that the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her. They shall be broken without hand. This is our strong confidence with respect to all our foes, and therefore we may possess our souls in patience. It is interesting that Daniel continued to do the king's business, notwithstanding the abundance of the revelations given unto him. However much we may be caught up into the heaven of religious meditation and ecstasy, we must never forget or neglect the interests which are committed to our hands, whether of the home, the business, or the state.
