sift

Give the king
The Psalm as a whole forms a complete vision of Messiah's kingdom so far as the O.T. revelation extended. All David's prayers will find their fruition in the kingdom ( Psalms 72:20 ); 2 Samuel 23:1-4 .
Psalms 72:1 refers to the investiture of the King's Son with the kingdom, of which investiture the formal description is given in Daniel 7:13 ; Daniel 7:14 ; Revelation 5:5-10 ; Psalms 72:2-7 ; Psalms 72:12-14 give the character of the kingdom. (Cf) Isaiah 11:3-9 .
The emphatic word is righteousness. The sermon on the Mount describes the kingdom of righteousness. Psalms 72:8-11 speak of the universality of the kingdom. Psalms 72:16 hints at the means by which universal blessing is to be brought in. Converted Israel will be the "handful of corn" Amos 9:9 as the King Himself in death and resurrection was the single grain, the "corn of wheat" John 12:24 "To the Jew first" is the order alike of Church and kingdom.; Romans 1:16 ; Acts 13:46 ; Acts 15:16 ; Acts 15:17 . It is through restored Israel that the kingdom is to be extended over the earth. Zechariah 8:13 ; Zechariah 8:20-23 .
See Psalms 89, next in order of the Messianic Psalms.

Verse Meaning

God would sift all the Israelites, among the other nations, to separate the people deserving judgment from the righteous few. He would allow the righteous person (true wheat) to slip through but would retain the unrighteous (a kernel, pebble, anything compacted, Heb. seror) for judgment. Another possibility is that those who do not pass through the screen represent the righteous remnant and all others are the sinful Israelites. He would separate the righteous from the sinful as He sifted through the Israelites. God determines just how much sinfulness makes His punishment inevitable; He determines the mesh of the sifting screen.

Context Summary

Amos 9:1-15 - The Day Of Restoration
The guilty will certainly be punished. If they enter the sacred place of worship, even that will not shelter them, Amos 9:1. Flight and concealment will be in vain. Let them climb ever so high, or burrow ever so deep; let them scale the loftiest hills, or dive into the deepest seas-the consequences of their sins will overtake them, Amos 9:2-3. How can sinners hope to escape from Him whose chambers are built in the heavens and whose voice governs the tides, Amos 9:6? The great desolations of the past prove the exactness and severity of His judgments, Amos 9:7-8. How remarkably Amos 9:9 has been fulfilled? Notwithstanding their scatterings, the Hebrew people have been preserved as a race.
The final paragraph, Amos 9:11-15, is very reassuring. It is a burst of noble anticipation, quoted by the Apostle James, Acts 15:14-17. The promises made to Abraham and David are yet to be fulfilled. The derision of their foes, of whom Edom was the ringleader, will be silenced. Through the parted curtain, we descry the golden age of the future. There is a divine plan working to its conclusion, and Israel shall yet come again to the land given to their fathers [source]
