2 Samuel 9:1-13
And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake? And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet. And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar. read more Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar. Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am? Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master's son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house. Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons. And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth. So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king's table; and was lame on both his feet. show less |

1 Samuel 14:24-46
And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food. And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground. And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. read more Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint. Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines? And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint. And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood. Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day. And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there. And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD. And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God. And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day. And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day. For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee. Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped. And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken. Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die. And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan. And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not. Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place. show less |

2 Samuel 21:14
And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land. |
So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with saul and jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with saul and jonathan.
Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And saul and jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and saul and jonathan his son are dead also.
And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that saul and jonathan his son be dead?
saul and jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of saul and jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
And the bones of saul and jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
and jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. and saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
and saul, and jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with saul and jonathan: but with saul and with jonathan his son was there found.
Now it came to pass upon a day, that jonathan the son of saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
Then said saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. and when they had numbered, behold, jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with saul and jonathan.
Then saul said to jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. and jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
and the people said unto saul, Shall jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued jonathan, that he died not.
Now the sons of saul were jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:
and it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto saul, that the soul of jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and jonathan loved him as his own soul.
and saul spake to jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.
But jonathan saul's son delighted much in David: and jonathan told David, saying, saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:
and jonathan spake good of David unto saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to theeward very good:
and saul hearkened unto the voice of jonathan: and saul sware, As the LORD liveth, he shall not be slain.
and jonathan called David, and jonathan shewed him all those things. and jonathan brought David to saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.
and the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and jonathan arose, and Abner sat by saul's side, and David's place was empty.
and it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and saul said unto jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?
Then saul's anger was kindled against jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?
and jonathan answered saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?
and saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.
and jonathan saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
and the Philistines followed hard upon saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, saul's sons.
and David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. and he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and saul and jonathan his son are dead also.
and David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that saul and jonathan his son be dead?
and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for saul, and for jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of jonathan turned not back, and the sword of saul returned not empty.
saul and jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
and jonathan, saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of saul and jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. and his name was Mephibosheth.
and David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of saul, that I may shew him kindness for jonathan's sake?
and the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? and Ziba said unto the king, jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.
But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of jonathan the son of saul, because of the LORD'S oath that was between them, between David and jonathan the son of saul.
and David went and took the bones of saul and the bones of jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain saul in Gilboa:
and he brought up from thence the bones of saul and the bones of jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.
and the bones of saul and jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. and after that God was intreated for the land.
and Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat saul, and saul begat jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.
and Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat saul; and saul begat jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.
and the Philistines followed hard after saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of saul.
