Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do iti>: for there isi> no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it isi> written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordainedi> by David.
But he slew not their children, but didi> as it isi> written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Now it isi> in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.
He appointedi> also the king's portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, to witi>, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths, and for the new moons, and for the set feasts, as it isi> written in the law of the LORD.
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it isi> written in the book of Moses. And so did theyi> with the oxen.
And somei> of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which isi> at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place:
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it isi> written in the law of Moses the man of God.
And i commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and thati> rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, andi> laid the foundation of the house of God which isi> in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yeti> it is not finished.
Now therefore, if it seemi> good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which isi> there at Babylon, whether it be soi>, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter andi> to destroy this house of God which isi> at Jerusalem. i Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.
And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which isi> at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.
Since the days of our fathers havei> we beeni> in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, andi> our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it isi> this day.
O LORD God of Israel, thou arti> righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it isi> this day: behold, we arei> before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
But the people arei> many, and it isi> a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is thisi> a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.
But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard iti>, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What isi> this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
Yet now our flesh isi> as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and somei> of our daughters are brought unto bondage alreadyi>: neither is iti> in our power to redeem themi>; for other men have our lands and vineyards.
Also i said, it isi> not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?
Wherein wasi> written, it is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, thati> thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There isi> a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it isi> written.
And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it isi> this day.
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring iti> into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it isi> written in the law:
Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it isi> written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:
Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this isi> Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, overi> an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)
And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws arei> diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it isi> not for the king's profit to suffer them.
And the king said unto Haman, The silver isi> given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.
Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what isi> thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.
And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What isi> thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what isi> thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.
And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What isi> thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what isi> thy request? and it shall be performed, eveni> to the half of the kingdom.
Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal iti> with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.
Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that isi>, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth dayi> thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which arei> from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
Now in the twelfth month, that isi>, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)
And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? now what isi> thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what isi> thy request further? and it shall be done.
Let the day perish wherein i was born, and the night in whichi> it was said, There is a man child conceived.
Return, i pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness isi> in it.
Whilst it isi> yet in his greenness, andi> not cut down, it withereth before any otheri> herb.
This isi> one thingi>, therefore i said iti>, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
is iti> good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
it isi> as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? The measure thereof isi> longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him? For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider iti>? read more For vain man would be wise, though man be born likei> a wild ass's colt. If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him; If iniquity bei> in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear: Because thou shalt forget thyi> misery, andi> remember iti> as waters thati> pass away: And thinei> age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, andi> thou shalt take thy rest in safety. show less
is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye soi> mock him?
He wandereth abroad for bread, sayingi>, Where is iti>? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
it shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it isi> none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.
Wheni> he is about to fill his belly, Godi> shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain iti> upon him while he is eating.
it is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors arei> upon him.
All darkness shall bei> hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.
As for me, isi> my complaint to man? and if it were soi>, why should not my spirit be troubled?
is iti> any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is iti> gain to himi>, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
How hast thou counselled him that hathi> no wisdom? and howi> hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?
If his children be multiplied, it isi> for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
By the great force of my diseasei> is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
For this isi> an heinous crime; yea, it isi> an iniquity to be punished byi> the judges.
For it isi> a fire thati> consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
Behold, my belly isi> as wine whichi> hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.
His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones thati> were not seen stick out.
is it fiti> to say to a king, Thou arti> wicked? andi> to princes, Ye arei> ungodly?
Surely it is meet to be said unto God, i have borne chastisementi>, i will not offend any morei>:
But now, because it isi> not soi>, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth iti> not in great extremity:
Knowest thou iti>, because thou wast then born? or becausei> the number of thy days isi> great?
To cause it to rain on the earth, wherei> no man is; oni> the wilderness, wherein there isi> no man;
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it isi> the sound of the trumpet.
And it was soi>, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that isi> right, as my servant Job hathi>.
Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending iti> in pieces, while there isi> none to deliver.
Like as a lion thati> is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
His going forth isi> from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
i am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
What profit is therei> in my blood, when i go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?
LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; thati> i may know how frail i ami>.
i will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done iti>: and i will wait on thy name; for it isi> good before thy saints.
Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is thati> shall tread down our enemies.
Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, whichi> is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it.
Why leap ye, ye high hills? this isi> the hill whichi> God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell in iti> for ever.
But it isi> good for me to draw near to God: i have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that i may declare all thy works.
For in the hand of the LORD there isi> a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring themi> out, andi> drink themi>.
it isi> burned with fire, it isi> cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
For a thousand years in thy sight are buti> as yesterday when it is past, and asi> a watch in the night.
The days of our years arei> threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they bei> fourscore years, yet isi> their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
{A Psalm ori> Song for the sabbath day.} it is ai> good thingi> to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:
When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it isi> that they shall be destroyed for ever:
The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewithi> he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.
Forty years long was i grieved with thisi> generation, and said, it isi> a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
Know ye that the LORD he isi> God: it isi> he thati> hath made us, and not we ourselves; we arei> his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forthi>.
Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is thati> shall tread down our enemies.
Let it be unto him as the garment whichi> covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.
This isi> the day whichi> the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Thy faithfulness isi> unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.
it isi> vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: fori> so he giveth his beloved sleep.
{A Song of degrees of David.} Behold, how good and how pleasant it isi> for brethren to dwell together in unity!
it isi> like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, eveni> Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
Praise the LORD; for the LORD isi> good: sing praises unto his name; for it isi> pleasant.
For there isi> not a word in my tongue, buti>, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
Suchi> knowledge isi> too wonderful for me; it is high, i cannot attaini> unto it.
it is hei> that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
Praise ye the LORD: for it isi> good to sing praises unto our God; for it isi> pleasant; andi> praise is comely.
For the merchandise of it isi> better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do iti>.
Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it isi> for his life.
For wisdom isi> better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
it isi> as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there isi> shouting.
He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for iti>: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there isi> that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendethi> to poverty.
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but wheni> the desire cometh, it isi> a tree of life.
The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it isi> abomination to fools to depart from evil.
A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth iti> not: but knowledge isi> easy unto him that understandeth.
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spokeni> in due season, how good is iti>!
it isi> an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.
How much better is iti> to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
Better it is to bei> of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Understanding isi> a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools isi> folly.
The hoary head isi> a crown of glory, ifi> it be found in the way of righteousness.
A gift is asi> a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
The beginning of strife is asi> when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
Wherefore is therei> a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hathi> no heart to iti>?
it isi> not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
The name of the LORD isi> a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
He that answereth a matter before he heareth iti>, it isi> folly and shame unto him.
Also, thati> the soul bei> without knowledge, it isi> not good; and he that hasteth with hisi> feet sinneth.
The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it isi> his glory to pass over a transgression.
Counsel in the heart of man is likei> deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work bei> pure, and whether it bei> right.
it isi> naught, it isi> naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
it isi> a snare to the man whoi> devoureth that which isi> holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
The king's heart isi> in the hand of the LORD, asi> the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
it isi> better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
it isi> joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall bei> to the workers of iniquity.
it isi> better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
There isi> treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.
The sacrifice of the wicked isi> abomination: how much more, wheni> he bringeth it with a wicked mind?
Foolishness isi> bound in the heart of a child; buti> the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
For it isi> a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, wheni> it moveth itself aright.
My son, eat thou honey, because it isi> good; and the honeycomb, which isi> sweet to thy taste:
These thingsi> also belongi> to the wise. it isi> not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
it isi> the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings isi> to search out a matter.
For better it isi> that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
it isi> better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
it isi> not good to eat much honey: so for meni> to search their own glory is noti> glory.
Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, it isi> no transgression; the same isi> the companion of a destroyer.
Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth iti> not.
The horseleach hath two daughters, cryingi>, Give, give. There are three things thati> are never satisfied, yeai>, four thingsi> say not, it isi> enough:
The grave; and the barren womb; the earth thati> is not filled with water; and the fire thati> saith not, it isi> enough.
For three thingsi> the earth is disquieted, and for four whichi> it cannot bear:
it isi> not for kings, O Lemuel, it isi> not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
All things arei> full of labour; man cannot utter iti>: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
The thing that hath been, it is thati> which shall be; and that which is done isi> that which shall be done: and there isi> no new thingi> under the sun.
is there anyi> thing whereof it may be said, See, this isi> new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Then said i in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was i then more wise? Then i said in my heart, that this also isi> vanity.
For there is a man whose labour isi> in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it fori> his portion. This also isi> vanity and a great evil.
There isi> nothing better for a man, thani> that he should eat and drink, and thati> he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also i saw, that it wasi> from the hand of God. For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereuntoi>, more than i? For Godi> giveth to a man that isi> good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that isi> good before God. This also isi> vanity and vexation of spirit.
And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it isi> the gift of God.
There is one alonei>, and there isi> not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is therei> no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith hei>, For whom do i labour, and bereave my soul of good? This isi> also vanity, yea, it isi> a sore travail.
Better is iti> that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
Behold thati> which i have seen: it isi> good and comely for onei> to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it isi> his portion.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this isi> vanity, and it isi> an evil disease.
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it isi> man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
it isi> better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that isi> the end of all men; and the living will lay iti> to his heart.
it isi> better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Wisdom isi> good with an inheritance: and by it there isi> profit to them that see the sun.
For wisdom isi> a defence, andi> money isi> a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, thati> wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
it isi> good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
There isi> no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath hei> power in the day of death: and there isi> no discharge in thati> war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just meni>, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked meni>, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: i said that this also isi> vanity.
Then i beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek iti> out, yet he shall not find iti>; yea further; though a wise mani> think to know iti>, yet shall he not be able to find iti>.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do iti> with thy might; for there isi> no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Truly the light isi> sweet, and a pleasant thing it isi> for the eyes to behold the sun:
Behold his bed, which isi> Solomon's; threescore valiant men arei> about it, of the valiant of Israel.
i sleep, but my heart waketh: it isi> the voice of my beloved that knocketh, sayingi>, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, andi> my locks with the drops of the night.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there isi> no soundness in it; buti> wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
Your country isi> desolate, your cities arei> burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it isi> desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, i cannot away with; it isi> iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
And it shall come to pass, that he that isi> left in Zion, and he thati> remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, eveni> every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:
And he laid iti> upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
But yet in it shall bei> a tenth, and iti> shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance isi> in them, when they cast their leaves: soi> the holy seed shall bei> the substance thereof.
For the head of Syria isi> Damascus, and the head of Damascus isi> Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.
And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; is iti> a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?
And it shall come to pass in that day, thati> the LORD shall hiss for the fly that isi> in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that isi> in the land of Assyria.
In the same day shall the Lord shave with a rasor that is hired, namelyi>, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk thati> they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God isi> with us.
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it isi> because there isi> no light in them.

But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such casesi>: but God hath called us to peace. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thyi> husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thyi> wife? But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain i in all churches. is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. Art thou called beingi> a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use iti> rather. For he that is called in the Lord, beingi> a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, beingi> free, is Christ's servant. Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God. Now concerning virgins i have no commandment of the Lord: yet i give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful. i suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, i sayi>, that it isi> good for a man so to be. Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife. But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but i spare you. But this i say, brethren, the time isi> short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none; And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not; And they that use this world, as not abusing iti>: for the fashion of this world passeth away. But i would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please hisi> wife. There is difference alsoi> between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please heri> husband. And this i speak for your own profit; not that i may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction. But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of heri> age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry. Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well. So then he that giveth heri> in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth heri> not in marriage doeth better. The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and i think also that i have the Spirit of God. show less
i say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as i.
i suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, i sayi>, that it isi> good for a man so to be.
But this i say, brethren, the time isi> short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
Howbeit there isi> not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat iti> as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
Or saith he iti> altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, thisi> is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is iti> a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do iti> to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
Neither be ye idolaters, as werei> some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God isi> faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear iti>.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth isi> the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for heri> hair is given her for a covering.
And when he had given thanks, he brake iti>, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
After the same manner also he tooki> the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink iti>, in remembrance of me.
If the foot shall say, Because i am not the hand, i am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
And if the ear shall say, Because i am not the eye, i am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them isi> without signification.
What is it then? i will pray with the spirit, and i will pray with the understanding also: i will sing with the spirit, and i will sing with the understanding also.
In the law it is written, With men ofi> other tongues and other lips will i speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commandedi> to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it isi> manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
So also isi> the resurrection of the dead. it is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: it is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was madei> a quickening spirit.
i beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and thati> they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
And whether we be afflicted, it isi> for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it isi> for your consolation and salvation.
We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, i believed, and therefore have i spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
For whether we be beside ourselves, it isi> to God: or whether we be sober, it isi> for your cause.
For if there be first a willing mind, it isi> accepted according to that a man hath, andi> not according to that he hath not.
As it is written, He that had gatheredi> much had nothing over; and he that had gatheredi> little had no lack.
Therefore it isi> no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
it is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. i will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. i knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, i cannot tell; or whether out of the body, i cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. And i knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, i cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it bei> that i myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong.
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed isi> every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it isi> evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed isi> every one that hangeth on a tree:
For if the inheritance bei> of the law, it isi> no more of promise: but God gave iti> to Abraham by promise.
Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for i bear you record, that, if it had beeni> possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
But it isi> good to be zealously affected always in ai> good thingi>, and not only when i am present with you.
For it is written, Rejoice, thoui> barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was borni> after the Spirit, even so it isi> now.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it isi> the gift of God:
Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because i have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of hisi> good pleasure.
Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed isi> not grievous, but for you it isi> safe.
Which is come unto you, as it isi> in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it dothi> also in you, since the day ye heard of iti>, and knew the grace of God in truth:
And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistlei> from Laodicea.
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received iti> not asi> the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
Seeing it isi> a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have freei> course, and be glorified, even as it isi> with you:
For every creature of God isi> good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
For we brought nothing into thisi> world, and it isi> certain we can carry nothing out.
it isi> a faithful saying: For if we be dead with himi>, we shall also live with himi>:
For it isi> impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth themi>, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
For it isi> evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it isi> of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
For a testament isi> of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
For it isi> not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Then said i, Lo, i come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
But without faith it isi> impossible to please himi>: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and thati> he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it isi> a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that isi> unprofitable for you.
And the tongue isi> a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
Whereas ye know not what shall bei> on the morrow. For what isi> your life? it is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, i lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
For what glory is iti>, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for iti>, ye take it patiently, this isi> acceptable with God.
But let it bei> the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornamenti> of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
For it isi> better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
For the time is comei> that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if iti> first begini> at us, what shall the end bei> of them that obey not the gospel of God?
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog isi> turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
i have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spiriti> of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
This is he that came by water and blood, eveni> Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
If any man see his brother sin a sin which isi> not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: i do not say that he shall pray for it.
But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty andi> two months.
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number isi> Six hundred threescore andi> six.
And i fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do iti> not: i am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
And he said unto me, it is done. i am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. i will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb isi> the light thereof.
