Possibly Abiasaph may be a distinct person from Ebiasaph; in genealogies generations are often passed over between two persons of the same name. The descendants of Abiasaph, of whom Shallum was chief, were "keepers of the gates of the tabernacle" (1 Chronicles 9:19; 1 Chronicles 9:31), and "had the set office over the things made in the pans," in David's time. ABIASAPH (= ‘father has gathered’), Exodus 6:24 = EBIASAPH (= ‘father has increased’), 1 Chronicles 6:23 ; 1Ch 6:37 ; 1 Chronicles 9:18 . The name of a division of the Korahite Levites, mentioned only in the genealogies of P [Note: Priestly Narrative.] and the Chronicler. According to 1 Chronicles 9:19 ; 1 Chronicles 26:1 (in the latter passage read Ebiasaph for Asaph), a section of the division acted as doorkeepers.
